Aesthetic damage: According to a survey by the National Association of Home Builders, 90% of home buyers rate the exterior appearance of a home as the most important factor when making a purchase decision. Fungi growth on the exterior can create unsightly stains and discoloration, which can negatively affect a home's appearance and curb appeal.

Similarly, fungi growth on wood, siding, and other materials can cause decay and weakening of the structure.

what is soft washing process

  • The soft washing process begins with a thorough inspection of the house's exterior surfaces. This helps any companies and individuals determine the appropriate cleaning solution and pressure settings for each surface.

  • Preparation: Before applying the cleaning solution, the company will take steps to protect any delicate or sensitive landscaping, such as covering plants and outdoor furniture

  • Cleaning solution: The cleaning solution used for soft washing is typically a mix of water, detergents, and other cleaning agents. Using a low-pressure sprayer, the company will mix the answer in a tank and apply it to the house. They will apply the solution evenly, taking care to cover every surface.

  • Dwell time: After applying the cleaning solution, the company will let it sit on the surfaces for some time to allow it to break down any dirt, grime, or mold.

  • Rinse: Once the cleaning solution has had time to work, the company will rinse it off using low-pressure water. They will take care to rinse every surface thoroughly to ensure that all the dirt and grime are removed.

  • Post-treatment: After rinsing, the company may apply a post-treatment to the surfaces to help protect them from future dirt and grime buildup.

What should you watch out for to avoid rookie mistakes if you want to DIY?

One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is using too much pressure when cleaning. Soft washing is all about using low-pressure water to clean surfaces gently. Too much stress can damage your property's siding, paint, or roofing material. You don't need much more pressure than a garden hose which is about 60 psi, and most people will run less than 500 psi with a gas-powered unit.

Another mistake homeowners make is using the wrong cleaning solution. Soft washing requires specialized cleaning solutions called surfactants, a fancy word for soaps designed to break down and dissolve contaminants like mold, mildew, and algae. There is a variety for sale but the biggest recommendation is to find some that have a long history of performance and one that has proper certifications that have gone through the testing processes to ensure it's environmentally safe.

We recommend that a professional do these jobs; however, if you are a true DIY person, make sure to do your research on good-quality soaps. They do most of the work for you. You will need a sprayer to apply the soap and chlorine mix. Also, you will need a low psi hose and a pressure source of less than 500 psi.
